Regulatory, Health and Safety opportunity focused on the transport and logistics sector with a Top 100 brand. Great opportunity for a more mainstream Criminal or Regulatory lawyer to specialise and develop their skills into advisory, client relationship management and training, as well as client representation and incident management.

My client is a Top 100 firm with commercial, private client and insurance client base. As a sub-set of a larger national Regulatory offering they have a niche team focused on the transport and logistics sector which obviously is a definable client focus with it's own regulators and specific industry issues to contend with. This small team has built a decent reputation nationally acting for clients ranging from household names and plcs, to smaller independent operators and family businesses. Client skills are vitally important as they want long term relationships with clients.

This isn't particularly an office based role as you'll expect a lot of client contact, and to be out and about at hearings, attending clients, conferences and doing business development activities. The team members are based in various regions, and a candidate based out of the Leeds office would have plenty of visibility and exposure in Yorkshire and the North East, and day to day wouldn't be in close proximity to immediate colleagues.

One element of the role is mixed Health & Safety and Corporate Crime in a reactionary capacity to incidents, investigations and prosecutions, representing clients who are in the transport sector but also occasionally non-transport clients. This would be a fairly straight forward step from a Criminal Defence background. Anyone with some transport offence experience or demonstrable interest in this niche would have a distinct advantage.

Another element is advising hauliers, licensed operators and bus/coach companies with specific regulatory issues in their sector. For this you'd develop sector specific knowledge, and genuine expertise of value to this target market.

A final element is pro-active and pre-emptive work to the same client base, to keep them abreast of legal and legislative changes. This would include non-contentious training, advisory work, compliance reviews, board room briefings and policy revision. This is all paid work, but it is also added value work to build relationships and maintain visibility. Prior experience of drafting or outward facing presenting and training will be particularly beneficial as it will be up to 30% of the role and therefore isn't something which can be avoided.

I'd expect the majority of candidates to be most proven with the client representation and advocacy elements, and less familiar with the advisory and training work, and relationship building with commercial and professional clients. There is a very high likelihood of this firm having to undertake some training of whoever they appoint, so they'll be objective in assessing applicants on merit, be that technical experience, sector knowledge, or broader soft skills' and approach which will align with the needs of this position.

If in doubt please do not hesitate to make contact to discuss, or make a confidential application for my consideration and response.

Brooke Thornham Consulting advertisements use PQE levels purely as a guide to the level of experience required for the role and this does not prohibit applications from candidates who are able to demonstrate the necessary skills and experience. We aim to respond to enquiries as soon as possible but if we have not contacted you within 5 days then unfortunately on this occasion your application has not quite met the requirements of our client closely enough.
